The Church’s Teaching on the Death Penalty
For years the death penalty has been viewed as a sound punishment when someone commits a crime. Recently, however, problems have risen, or more so been brought to the public eye. As criminals come and go throughout the world, a handful are placed on death row. Death row is where criminals go to be executed for their crimes. These crimes range from treason, murder, and even drug trafficking. In 2019 alone 22 people’s lives were taken. 22 too many. Their deaths weren’t painless either. Some chose electrocution and others chose a firing squad. While these death sentences are given for what seems to be the better of our society, there is nothing morally right about these things. The Catholic Church puts rules in place for these kinds of decisions ,and yet the crimes haven’t stopped. On this website you will find pages elaborating on the church’s teaching and answers to frequently asked questions along with sources.
